What is the difference between a wisdom tooth extraction and surgery?

A simple extraction is used when the wisdom tooth has fully come through the gum and can be removed in one piece, much like other teeth.

Wisdom tooth surgery (also called surgical removal or odontectomy) is used when the tooth is impacted, meaning it is partly or fully trapped under the gum or bone, or growing at an angle. The dentist makes a small opening in the gum and may divide the tooth into sections to remove it.

Which one you need depends on the position of the tooth, which is checked using an X-ray.

Can I use MediSave for wisdom tooth surgery?

Yes. Wisdom tooth surgery is a MediSave-claimable day surgery procedure for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. At Smileplus Dental, the $1,500 surgery fee is fully MediSave-claimable.

Simple extractions are not usually MediSave-claimable, because they are not classed as surgery. These are paid in cash, or with CHAS, Pioneer or Merdeka subsidies where eligible.

How does a MediSave claim work?

  1. Examination and X-ray. The dentist confirms whether surgery is needed and explains the cost.

  2. Sign the MediSave form. You can use your own MediSave account or an immediate family member's account, subject to CPF rules.

  3. Clinic submits the claim. Our team submits it to CPF for you.

  4. Pay any balance. If the claim is within your MediSave withdrawal limit and balance, there may be no cash payable for the surgery.

MediSave withdrawals are subject to Ministry of Health limits and the available balance. Our team can check this with you before the procedure.

Can I use CHAS, Pioneer or Merdeka Generation subsidies?

Smileplus Dental is a CHAS clinic, and we also see Pioneer Generation (PG) and Merdeka Generation (MG) cardholders.

  • CHAS (Blue, Orange) and PG/MG cardholders may receive subsidies for eligible dental services, including extractions. The subsidy amount depends on your card tier and the procedure.

  • Check-ups, scaling and polishing, fluoride and X-rays for eligible CHAS, PG and MG cardholders are offered at $0 top-up at our clinic.

  • Subsidies and MediSave can sometimes be used together for surgical procedures. Our team will explain what applies to you at the visit.

Please bring your NRIC and CHAS, PG or MG card to your appointment.

How long does wisdom tooth surgery take?

Most wisdom tooth procedures at our clinic take about 30–45 minutes. You are awake during the procedure, and the area is numbed with local anaesthesia. Many patients return to work or school within a few days, depending on the type of procedure.

Is sedation available for nervous patients?

Yes. For patients who feel anxious, oral sedation is available for $200, which covers the medication and an in-person consultation. The dentist will assess whether it is suitable for you and explain what to expect, including the need to have someone accompany you home.

When should a wisdom tooth be removed?

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. A dentist may suggest removal if the tooth is causing repeated gum swelling, decay, damage to the neighbouring tooth, or is likely to cause problems based on its position on the X-ray. The decision is made after an examination.
