Cause 1: Decay
Tooth decay happens due to the food trap that results from the impacted wisdom tooth. This results in hidden decay that only presents when severe pain occurs. This usually results in loss of both the wisdom tooth and the 2nd molar, which will impact function significantly.
Cause 2: Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis is the inflammation of the gums above and around the tooth due to the overlying gum flap that causes chronic inflammation. This will result in a throbbing recurrent pain that will only resolve with the removal of the wisdom tooth.
