Short answer: At Smileplus Dental, a dental crown costs $920 without subsidies, or $300 with a Blue CHAS, Merdeka Generation or Pioneer Generation card. Crowns are generally paid in cash, but if you're 60 or above you can use up to $400 of Flexi-MediSave. Treatment usually takes two visits, and the dentist confirms whether a crown suits your tooth, and the final price, after an examination.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over your own tooth, covering it above the gum line. It's made to match the shape and colour of your neighbouring teeth.

Dentists commonly suggest a crown when a tooth has been weakened, for example:

  • after a root canal treatment, when the tooth is more brittle

  • when a tooth has a large filling and not much natural tooth left

  • when a tooth is cracked or badly worn down

  • to cover a tooth that is badly discoloured or misshapen

Whether a crown is the right choice for your tooth is something the dentist checks at your consultation.

How much does a dental crown cost at Smileplus Dental?

  • Dental crown, no subsidy card – Price: $920; How it's paid: Cash

  • Dental crown with Blue CHAS, Merdeka or Pioneer card – Price: $300; How it's paid: Cash, after subsidy

Prices are nett. Hougang branch prices are subject to GST.

With an eligible card, that's $620 less for the same crown. If you hold another CHAS card, such as Orange CHAS, a subsidy may still apply; our team will check your card and confirm the amount before treatment.

Can I use MediSave for a dental crown?

Generally, no. MediSave can be used for approved surgical dental procedures, such as dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth surgery. Making and fitting a crown on your own tooth doesn't involve surgery, so it's paid in cash, with a CHAS, Merdeka or Pioneer subsidy if you're eligible. If you're 60 or above, you can also use Flexi-MediSave of up to $400 towards the cash cost, subject to CPF rules.

There's one common exception that's worth knowing about. If you're replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, the crown on top of the implant is part of the implant package. At Smileplus Dental, a single implant with its crown is $2,600 in total: MediSave $1,950 and Cash $650. You can read the full breakdown in our guide to dental implant cost and MediSave.

What's included in the price?

The listed price covers preparing your tooth, making the crown and fitting it. Treatment usually takes two visits:

  1. Consultation and examination: the dentist checks the tooth and may take an X-ray to look at the root and surrounding bone.

  2. Preparing the tooth: the tooth is gently shaped so the crown can fit over it, using local anaesthetic. Each visit usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

  3. Impressions and a temporary crown: a mould or scan of your tooth is taken so the crown can be made to fit, and a temporary cover protects the tooth in the meantime.

  4. Fitting: at the second visit, the permanent crown is tried in, checked for bite and colour, and cemented in place.

If another treatment is needed first, such as a root canal treatment, our team will explain it and its cost separately before you decide to go ahead.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often, especially for back teeth. A root-canal-treated tooth can become more brittle, and back teeth take most of the force when you chew, so a crown helps protect it. For some front teeth with plenty of healthy structure left, a filling may be enough. The dentist will explain the options for your tooth.

If you're weighing up whether to save an infected tooth or replace it, our article on root canal or implant walks through the differences.

Crown, filling or implant: which one is for what?

  • What it does – Filling: Repairs part of a tooth; Crown: Caps and protects your whole tooth; Implant: Replaces a missing tooth

  • Surgery needed – Filling: No; Crown: No; Implant: Yes, to place the implant

  • MediSave – Filling: Not claimable; Crown: Flexi-MediSave up to $400 (age 60+); Implant: Implant surgery is claimable

  • Cost at Smileplus Dental – Filling: Ask our team; Crown: $920, or $300 with subsidy; Implant: $2,600: MediSave $1,950 + Cash $650

How long does a dental crown last, and how do I look after it?

How long a crown lasts depends on your bite, your habits and how well you look after the tooth underneath, which can still decay at the edge near the gum. To help it last:

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily, paying attention to the gum line around the crown.

  • Avoid biting on very hard things like ice, bones or pen caps.

  • Come in for regular check-ups so the dentist can check the crown's fit and the gum around it.

If a crown feels loose or comes off, keep it safe and book a visit.
