What should I expect if I want to get an implant?

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing or damaged teeth. They are small titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jaw to act as a replacement for the roots of missing teeth. Once the implant has fused with the jaw, a replacement tooth, or a bridge or denture, can be attached to the implant.

Diagnosis

The first step in the process of getting a dental implant is to have a thorough examination of your teeth and gums by a dentist or oral surgeon. This may include X-rays and other diagnostic tests to determine the condition of your jaw and the surrounding teeth.

Based on the diagnosis, the dentist or oral surgeon will then discuss the treatment options with you, and together you will decide on the best course of action for your individual case.

Treatment Planning

If it is determined that you are a candidate for a dental implant, the dentist or oral surgeon will then plan the treatment. This may include scheduling the surgery, discussing any preparation instructions, and determining the type of implant and replacement tooth that will be used.

It is also important to note that implant treatment may require multiple appointments and will take minimum of 3 months from start to finish to complete. This may include a healing period for the implant to fuse with the jawbone, and the creation and placement of the replacement tooth.

Treatment

The actual procedure for placing a dental implant is typically performed in the dentist's office or oral surgeon's office, and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the number of implants being placed and the condition of the jawbone.

During the surgery, the dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in the gums to access the jawbone. The implant will then be placed into the jawbone and the gums will be closed with stitches.

Rest assured, the procedure is relatively quick and painless. The surgical team will ensure that you are comfortable and well taken care of throughout the entire process.

Post-Operative Care

After the surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling, pain, and bleeding for a few days. The dentist or oral surgeon will provide instructions for how to care for the implant site and manage any pain or discomfort. This may include taking medications, applying ice to the area, and avoiding solid foods for a period of time.

It is important to follow the post-operative instructions provided by your dentist or oral surgeon to ensure proper healing. Most of our patients take minimal painkillers after the surgery and most do not have swelling post operatively.

Crown on Implant

Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, usually after 3-4 months, an impression of the implant is taken to create a custom-made crown. This process typically takes about 2-3 weeks. The new custom-made crown is then placed on the implant abutment.

Cementing a Crown onto an Implant

Once the custom-made crown is received, it is then placed on the implant abutment and a special dental cement is used to secure the crown onto the implant. The process of cementing a crown onto an implant is typically painless and takes about 20-30 minutes.

Maintenance and Hygiene

To ensure the longevity of your dental implant, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist or oral surgeon regularly for check-ups and cleanings. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth and implant at least twice a day, and using an antiseptic mouthwash to keep the area clean.

It is also important to avoid habits that can damage the implant, such as biting on excessively hard objects or grinding your teeth.

Costs and MediSave Claims

The cost of getting a dental implant in Singapore can vary depending on the number of implants being placed, the type of implant used, and the condition of the jawbone. On average, the cost can range from $3000 to $6000 per implant, but with Smileplus dental our implants are at $2250, with $1250 being from medisave fully claimable.

In conclusion

Dental implants are a reliable and long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. The process from diagnosis to treatment plan to post-operative care is a well-established one. With proper care and maintenance, a dental implant can last for many years and provide a natural-looking and functioning replacement for a missing tooth.
